Bachelor of Arts in Geography Studies (BA GEOG)
Department of Geography, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, YU

Duration: 2 years
Mode of Delivery: Blended (Online via Moodle/eClass and face-to-face, in Dadaab)
Credits earned: 90 credits

Program Description
The BA GEOG offered by York University is one of the largest and most comprehensive Geography programs in Canada. YU offers courses in all the major subfields of Geography, including human geography, physical geography, and techniques of geography, such as GIS and remote sensing. The Department has more than 20 full-time professors, many of whom are highly accomplished and internationally known in their specialties.

Program structure
Students in the York University BA in Geography under the BHER project will complete 60 credits during their enrolment in the program. They will also carry forward 30 credits from their studies in Certificate or Diploma programs or other University-level study, to graduate with a 90-credit degree.

There will be no practicum or attachment component in this academic program. Students will complete courses online, working independently. Most students will be required to attend the BHER Learning Centre one day per week throughout all terms to participate in tutorial activities; alternate arrangements may be made for students who no longer reside in Dadaab.

Admissions criteria
In order to be considered for admission to the degree in Geography offered by York University under the BHER project, applicants must meet the following criteria:
(1) Have graduated from secondary school and hold a KCSE or equivalent
(2) Hold at least thirty credits or the equivalent at the university level (ten half-courses or one year of full-time study) from York University, Moi/UBC, Kenyatta University, or another accredited university approved by York University
(3) Have earned the equivalent of a York University C+ average (GPA of 6) in previous university-level studies

Bachelor of Arts in Educational Studies (BA EDST)
Faculty of Education, YU

Duration: 2 years
Mode of Delivery: Blended (Online via Moodle/eClass and face-to-face, in Dadaab)
Credits earned: 90 credits

Program Description
The BA EDST program at York provides students with the depth of knowledge needed to understand education and its role in society today. Students in this program develop the essential skills necessary to succeed in educational work outside of the traditional classroom. Please note that the BA in EDST is not a teaching certification, but a degree that explores the field of education. Students enrolled in the BA EDST benefit from the Faculty of Education’s strength in the study of education and York University’s strength in the arts, humanities and social sciences.

Students in the York University BA in Educational Studies under the BHER project will complete 60 credits during their enrolment in the program. They will also carry forward 30 credits from their studies in Certificate or Diploma programs or other University-level study, to graduate with a 90-credit degree.

Students will complete courses online, working independently. There will be a practicum/attachment component in this academic program where students will run professional development workshops in their local schools. The Faculty of Education’s community-based learning offers students an opportunity to put theory to practice in the field of learning and education. As a student of our Educational Studies program, you’ll develop workplace-specific skills and enhance your professional networks – all while completing your degree. In the context of Dadaab, these PD workshops are organized in collaboration with Lutheran World Federation (LWF), the NGO implementing primary schools in the camps.

Note that at York University, most single-semester courses are worth 3 “credits”. Courses that run for two semesters (full-year) are often 6-credit courses. 9-credit courses are also offered over a full-year, but have a heavier work load.

YU divides the academic year into three semesters: Fall (Sep to Dec), Winter (Jan to Apr) and Summer (May to Aug).
