Under the BHER Project, Kenyatta University has offered the BEd in Science, BEd in Arts, and BEd in Primary Teacher Education. See links and descriptions below for program details.


Bachelor of Education in Science (BEd Sci)
School of Education, KU

Duration: 2 years
Mode of Delivery: Blended (Online via KUSOMA and face-to-face invigilated exams in Dadaab)
Units earned: 48 units

Program description
The BEd Sci offered by Kenyatta University is an academic program that prepares students to become science secondary school teachers, administrators in academic institutions or policy developers in the education sector. It is a credential that is recognized by the Teachers’ Service Commission in Kenya.

Program structure
Students in the (BHER) Kenyatta University BEd Science will complete 33 units. They will also carry forward 15 units from their studies in Certificate or Diploma programs, to graduate with a 48-unit degree.

There will be a practicum in this academic program to be done in the third semester of their third year. The teaching practice (practicum) session will last a whole school term (3 months). Students doing physics, chemistry and biology will be required to do some practical lessons via face-to-face sessions with the lecturer which will be organized in the lab facilities in Dadaab. Students will otherwise complete courses online, working independently on their tablets.

Admissions criteria
In order to be considered for admission to the BEd Science offered by Kenyatta University under the BHER project, applicants must meet the following criteria:
Option 1:
(1) Mean grade of C (plain) at KCSE or Division III at KCE or equivalent; 
(2) With a Diploma from Moi University in Science Education or Arts Education with C (plain) in two teaching subjects at KCSE OR a diploma in Education from a recognized institution with two years teaching experience OR KACE with two Principal passes and one Subsidiary pass;  (3) In addition, applicants must have obtained Grade C (plain) or equivalent in Mathematics in KCSE.
OR
Option 2:
(1) Mean grade of C- (minus) at KCSE or equivalent; 
(2) Progressed from Certificate to Diploma at Kenyatta University (or any other recognized institutions) with C (plain) in two teaching subjects.

Bachelor of Education in Arts (BEd Arts)
School of Education, KU

Duration: 2 years
Mode of Delivery: Blended (Online via KUSOMA and face-to-face invigilated exams in Dadaab)
Units earned: 48 units

Program description
The BEd Arts offered by Kenyatta University is an academic program that prepares students to become secondary school teachers in the humanities, administrators in academic institutions or policy developers in the education sector. It is a credential that is recognized by the Teachers’ Service Commission in Kenya. 

Program structure
Students in the (BHER) Kenyatta University BEd Arts will complete 33 units. They will also carry forward 15 units from their studies in Certificate or Diploma programs, to graduate with a 48-unit degree.

(1) Mean grade of C (plain) at KCSE or Division III at KCE or equivalent of one;  (2) With a BHER diploma from KU or Diploma in Education from a recognized Institution with at least two years teaching experience after training.
OR
Option 2:
(1) Mean grade of C- (minus) at KCSE or equivalent and progressed from York University Certificate to BHER Diploma at Kenyatta University or any other recognized/accredited Institutions. The students from the diploma in primary teacher education will continue with the teaching subject chosen at diploma level;  (2) Other students will be required to have a C (plain) at KCSE in two teaching subjects of their choice (with minimum grade)

Bachelor of Education in Primary Teacher Education (BEd PTE)
School of Education, KU

Duration: 2 years

The BEd PTE offered by Kenyatta University is an academic program that prepares students to become school teachers, administrators in academic institutions or policy developers in the education sector. It is a credential that is recognized by the Teachers’ Service Commission in Kenya.

Note that at Kenyatta University, single-semester courses are worth 1 “unit”. Kenyatta University divides the academic year in to three semesters: 1st Semester (September to December), 2nd Semester (January to April), and 3rd Semester (May to August).
